Ayumu eighth on day one at Portimao
Red Bull KTM Tech3’s Ayumu Sasaki delivered a positive start to the penultimate round of the 2021 Moto3 World Championship season. Following the 11th fastest time in the Portuguese sunshine this morning, he improved by more than half a second in FP2 to conclude the opening day at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in eighth position overall, which secures him an overnight direct Q2 ticket.
“I think we had a decent first day. We have been working on race pace during the day and I felt good. It’s a bit windy here, so to do a fast lap time alone is pretty difficult. But I was working on it and in the end, we improved again with a new tyre. P8 is quite good, although I have to admit, I was expecting a little bit more. At the same time, I was expecting a little bit less wind. The lap time is more or less there. Hopefully, it’s less windy tomorrow morning. I have a good feeling with the bike and I’m quite confident. I will try to improve again tomorrow morning to go straight to Q2 and hopefully we can do something very well in Qualifying as well.”
